Welcome to the Official Home Page of the West Jersey Astronomical Society (additionally known as the Willingboro Astronomical Society). Our club is in its 57th year of serving both the public and the amateur astronomers of the Delaware Valley. We have a long history of public education, star parties, interesting meetings, in-depth training and experienced leadership. We are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Club member Jim Mack captured the galaxy pair Messier 51, which consists of NGC 5194, the Whirlpool Galaxy, and NGC 5195, its pup, in the constellation, Canes Venatici. They are connected by a tidal stream drawn by their interaction. Charles Messier quaintly described this entry in his catalog as "two atmospheres," and they are sometimes known as M51a and M51b respectively. Jim captured this image on April 5, 2024, from a dark site in eastern Manatee County, FL. He used a Celestron 9.25" Edge HD Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with a ZWO ASI2600MCP astro camera riding a ZWO AM5 strain wave equatorial mount, all controlled by an ASIAIR unit. It's a stack of 16 x 300 second sub-exposures for a total exposure of 80 minutes. Click here, or the image, for a larger version.
