Welcome to the Official Home Page of the West Jersey Astronomical Society (additionally known as the Willingboro Astronomical Society). Our club is in its 57th year of serving both the public and the amateur astronomers of the Delaware Valley. We have a long history of public education, star parties, interesting meetings, in-depth training and experienced leadership. We are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Click here for membership information. Members in good standing have access to the gated Barnegat Road Observing Site in the dark New Jersey Pines.

Photo Spotlight Image posted 7.19.2024
The Red Planet Mars just passed the distant planet Uranus when this image of them, along with the Pleiades star cluster, all in the constellation Taurus, was captured on July 19, 2024. Both planets are currently moving in direct motion (west to east, or upper-right to lower-left in this view), Mars considerably quicker than Uranus (here they are on July 16). They were in conjunction on July 15, 2024, just half a degree apart, but here they're 2.5° apart. Uranus will reach opposition on November 16, but because of Mars' more rapid movement eastward, it won't reach opposition until January 15, 2025.
This is a single raw frame taken at 3:24 am EDT by Joe Stieber from dark Carranza Field in Wharton State Forest, NJ, with a Canon EOS RP DSLM camera and a Canon 200 mm f/2.8L telephoto lens on a fixed tripod. It was exposed 2 seconds at f/2.8, ISO 6400 and daylight white balance. It was mildly adjusted in Canon's Digital Professional 4, not cropped (for a field 10.2° wide x 6.8° high) then converted to this JPEG. Mouseover for labels.
