Photo Spotlight   Image posted 05.10.2016

Steve Mattan captured this image of the planet Mercury in transit across the sun on May 9, 2016, from Batsto Village in Wharton State Forest, NJ. Mercury is the black dot below-right of the sun's center. A large sunspot (AR 2542) is also visible above-left of the sun's center (mouseover for labels). This image was captured at 11:31 am EDT with a Canon EOS 60D digital SLR camera and a Canon EF 100 to 400 mm f/4.5-5.6L IS zoom lens (on a  fixed tripod) set to 400 mm focal length plus a Canon EF 2x extender for a working focal length of 800 mm. It was exposed 1/800 second at f/11, ISO 200, through a white-light solar filter.

Steve's picture below, taken at 8:50 am, shows the scope setup at Batsto. His camera+lens is the first one at the lower-left.
