Welcome to the Official Home Page of the West Jersey Astronomical Society (formerly known as the Willingboro Astronomical Society). Our club is in its 51st year of serving both the public and the amateur astronomers of the Delaware Valley. We have a long history of public education, star parties, interesting meetings, in-depth training and experienced leadership. We are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Dec 7 New Moon at 2:20 am EST in southern Ophiuchus.
Dec 7 Formal Meeting, 7:30 pm at the Virtua Health and Wellness Center in Moorestown, NJ. As always, guests are welcome and no astronomical experience is necessary. Use the Main Entrance and check with the security guard who will direct you to the conference room. Elections for the 2019 officers will be held. Here are the minutes from the November 16 meeting.
Dec 8 Member Star Watch at Atsion. Check back the day of the event for the weather call.
Dec 15 Holiday Party for members, family and their guests only, at the Virtua Center. It will begin at 6:00 pm.
Dec 20 Astrophotography Meeting, 7:00 pm at the Virtua Health and Wellness Center in Moorestown, NJ. Arthur Stoppe will make a presentation on Building Your Own PC for Image Processing.
Dec 21 Solstice at 5:23 pm EST. The sun reaches its most southerly declination and Winter begins for the Northern Hemisphere.
Dec 21 Informal Meeting, 7:30 pm at the Virtua Health and Wellness Center in Moorestown, NJ. Note: Beginning in 2019, we will have meetings on the first Friday and third Thursday of the month (this is a change from the third Friday).
Dec 22 Full Moon at 12:49 pm EST in western Gemini.

Photo Spotlight   Image posted 11.15.2018

Club member Dan McCauley captured this image of the archetypical edge-on spiral galaxy, NGC 891, which is located in the constellation Andromeda. This image was captured on November 11, 2018, from Cinnaminson, NJ (deep in the light pollution of nearby Philadelphia) between 7:00 and 10:00 pm EST. Dan used a ZWO ASI183 camera and a Takahashi TOA-130 apo refractor with an f/5.3 reducer yielding 689 mm focal length. Exposure was two hours total (60 x 2 minute subs), luminance only. Dan notes that with these newer low-noise cameras, it's possible to take very good deep sky photos in an urban location. Mouseover for an enlarged view.

 

 

In Memoriam

Bernie Kosher, a longtime member of the Willingboro and then West Jersey Astronomical Society, passed on September 4, 2018. He was a highly valued member of the club and a good friend of all the members who knew him. He will be very much missed (see our tribute page). The Bucks-Mont Astronomical Association has established The Bernie Kosher Scholarship Fund for accepting donations.
