Bight ruddy Mars is now past opposition and is in retrograde (westward) motion near the head of Scorpius. It will be stationary on June 30th. This picture of the area was taken by Joe Stieber on June 7, 2016, at 11:40 pm EDT from Maple Shade, NJ, using a Canon 40D digital SLR camera on a fixed tripod and a Canon 100 mm f/2.8L macro lens (with a "diffuser" filter) providing a field about 12° wide x 8° high. Exposed 4 seconds at f/4, ISO 800. Some interesting double stars inhabit this area, see this Sky & Telescope article. Mouseover for labels.
